Tips to Get Your Foot in the Door

Set mini daily goals. Finding employment takes longer than you might expect. Establish manageable daily goals such as making five phone calls, setting up a coffee meeting with a former colleague, reviewing new online postings, or following up on previous applications.

Submit a customized resumé. Avoid using a one-size-fits-all document; customize it for the position to which you are applying. Review for spelling mistakes and other errors.

Include a professional summary. Include two to three sentences at the top of your resumé that explain to the reader what you have to offer and what you are seeking in employment. Avoid generic or vague phrases such as "looking for a position at a well-known treatment center with room for growth." Instead, use the space for specific goals and accomplishments. For example: "Registered Dietitian with five years experience of inpatient treatment for eating disorders. Extensive knowledge in the nutritional management of anorexia and bulimia."

Do away with weak language. Never start your resumé bullets with "Responsible for ..." Just go right into your key points. For example:

- Incorrect: Responsible for providing family therapy.

- Correct: Provided family therapy to more than 100 families.

Make contact with others. Once you apply for a position, do not wait for their call. Make contact with the person responsible for hiring.

People hire people, so tap into your online social networks, alumni contacts, neighbors, etc. There are professional groups for you to join where you can connect with people in the field of eating disorders who are willing to help friends and strangers alike. Learn about professional development opportunities in your area where you will meet others who specialize in eating disorders.

Have a realistic sense of accomplishment, knowing that you are taking the necessary steps to get your foot in the door!
